The student athletes are getting paid...in the form of a scholarship. They choose to pursue football and enter into a contract of football in exchange for a scholarship. The other students on campus have to pay for their education so the athletes are in fact getting paid. You cannot request to change the terms of the contract after agreeing and signing to the terms. I know to some it may not seem fair, but unfortunately, that is the deal student athletes enter into. I do think the coaches' salaries are definitely getting out of control.

The student athletes are the ones putting in the time, sacrificing their bodies and often times their future (concussions) for the program. College football makes millions a year, coaches make millions a year and the players get in trouble for a free dinner. It's one thing if the coaches were making an average salary, but if you have 11 million for one coach (keep in mind the other coaches on the staff are also getting paid), don't tell me there isn't enough to sprinkle around to the athletes. They deserve at least that much of a "Thank you!"
